Finding Balance

balance Finding Balance

Somehow it is Wednesday and as I type this post, I realize that I forgot to send something to share with my Kindergartner today. Oops! This is what happens after a long weekend going into a short work & school week. I somehow lose all sense of what is what! Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the extra time off and the extra R&R but it just throws me off. So my question to you is do you have a balance? I am a busy mama {aren’t we all busy in our own way?} I am very blessed to be a SAHM but my days and minutes fill up quickly just the same.  Kate over at Censational Girl had me rethinking my routine or lack of when I read this post on her blog last week. Now don’t get me wrong, I have the best intentions to follow a routine however, “life happens” and things don’t always work as planned. However, I think it is time I adopted some sort of routine. Aside from driving kids to and from school filled in with whatever other tasks seem to be calling, I need to find a better balance. So right here in front of the whole wide blog world I am going to attempt a schedule that goes something like this:

Sunday: Aside from family time I’d also like to do my meal planning. Hoping to make this a joint effort between me and the hubby.

Monday: Grocery shop and errands

Tuesday: yoga, blogging (getting ahead of myself so that I can just release blogs on days that are too busy for writing).

Wednesday: Research, explore and write about  ‘local spots’ for blogs.

Thursday: Work in son’s classroom and yoga

Friday: Clean house – start the weekend off fresh

Saturday: Start with yoga and then enjoy the day with family and friends.

Of course my afternoon hours are dedicated to the family. Things like baking cookies, cooking dinner, homework and reading.

Did you notice that a certain activity keeps popping up? Yoga. Well that is my personal and internal ‘balance’ which I know is so important to maintain. I am a stressor and a doer. Both of which contribute to migraines and just a sense of being unbalanced. I try very hard to make time for things like yoga and walking. It helps so much and I feel that by taking those small windows for me, I am all the better for my family. Thankfully I have a hubby that supports these healthy habits.

Now of course that is a loose schedule and so many things pop up throughout the week but I think a general schedule is smart. Be fair to yourself and except the unexpected. This will make you feel like your routine is more of a success then a failure.

Do you feel like you have a balance? Or are you seeking one? I honestly feel that when you ‘schedule’ things, they are more likely to happen.

A Creative Idea for Meal Planning

This fabulous blog post fell into my lap yesterday and I think it might be the answer to all of my meal planning woes {yes, I am very dramatic about this subject}. The cabinets on either side of my stove are glass paneled so I have to be creative as far as where I put it but regardless, I am so in love with Erin’s idea. Here is a photo of her completed project. Click here to head on over to Crafts & Sutch. I promise you this, you will want to stay and visit for awhile. She has so many cute ideas!

Do you have an organized method for meal planning? I’d love to hear it and even see photos if it is something extra creative like this one.

Trader Joes vs. other grocery stores

trader joes Trader Joes vs. other grocery stores

As of late I have an obsession — well more of a challenge. Meal planning and grocery shopping. I am truly an organized person and I appreciate the best deals. I’d say I am pretty average as far as my shopping. I don’t but a lot of junk but I am also not one who buys all organic either. We are on a budget so I have to stretch the dollars. Organic just takes up so much more money and it is not always possible to make that ‘splurge’. I have high hopes of having a higher producing garden this summer. I am also big on Farmers Markets. Just being at a Farmers Market puts me in a good mood! Anyway, back to the dreaded meal planning. Somehow I get a little too consumed with all of the ads. Do I shop all local stores to get the best deals? Seems silly and time consuming! Lately I have shopped various stores and I definitely have opinions and a favorite store. If  I could do all of my shopping and save a good amount of money, I would choose Raleys. That is where I used to do most of my shopping. Primarily for the free childcare which just made my life easy and the extra money spent so worth it. I also feel like I always find all of the things I like at Raleys. I decided to branch out though based on what people were saying. I have shopped Safeway more often lately. I can not navigate that store as easily which makes me a little frustrated as it turns in to a longer shopping trip. I also don’t find all of the items that I am used to finding at Raleys. I do however love seeing the savings when I use my club card, it is pretty significant. Another store I have navigated is Winco. Great deals but sometimes it feels overwhelming as far as people. I am also not impressed by the produce section. I have also shopped Food for Less quite a bit lately and I am impressed by some of the prices as well as the cleanliness of the store. They are actually owned by the same company as Nugget. The produce seems fresh and the store seems to have a lot of what I am used to buying. Which leads me to Nugget. I do love Nugget. It is a very ‘pretty’ store where I can often find great treats, etc. I love the fresh selection of salsas, olives and cheeses. It can get rather pricey though so I am picky about what I am buying there. A few items will easily run me $30. Not practical on a budget. Now the one thing I have found is that you can find deals everywhere. Some stores sell things for less then other stores regardless if most items are more or less. You will always find something cheaper in one store then another based on brands and weekly sales. So now you have my low down on how I shop. Now, the last store that I want to talk about here is Trader Joes. I have family members that work for the store. I know that the company is a great one. They are super friendly and the prices are pretty phenomenal. Plus how can you not love the Hawaiian shirts? icon smile Trader Joes vs. other grocery stores That alone has to make you feel happy! They have a decent selection. I came across an article on Shine yesterday and I thought it was pretty accurate in what the pros and cons are. I wanted to share that article with you. Here is recap of what to buy at Trader Joes and what you might want to shop for elsewhere.

To Buy:

  • Freezer Foods
  • Dairy and cheeses
  • Load up on staples such as rice, beans, etc.
  • Think outside the food box, items like plants, herbs and flowers will cost you less then big box stores

Also keep in mind that Trader Joe’s has a healthier philosophy and you will notice this by the ingredients they use as well as the amount of organic items (which don’t have as hefty of a price tag as other stores).

To avoid or be mindful of:

  • Produce: Things are prepackaged which means you don’t get to pick the best items, the quality also doesn’t seem as great on many items {although I do like their herbs}.
  • Meats: The prices tend to be a bit higher and they are probably not as fresh considering that they do not have an in-store butcher. However, they do offer a decent variety of grass-fed and organic items.
  • Treats: This is debatable. I have loved buying some easy treats for hosting parties at home and school but beware, these are ever so tempting but they can add a hefty price to your shopping bill.
  • Bakery items: These are hit and miss depending on the store and time of day

For the full article head on over to Shine by clicking here.

A few other tips I’d like to offer for shopping especially for meat are Costco. You can buy in bulk for so much less. We do this and you can break down the bulk items into meal sized packaging and freeze them to use as needed. We have also become a fan of a semi local butcher called Swingles. They are located in Jackson but you can get so much for your money . It is fresh, a lot of it is local and again you buy a lot at one time {making the drive worth it} and then you can also throwit in the freezer for a later date. I am sure there are other local butchers, this is just one that we have found and are quite happy with.

How and where do you shop? Are you a one stop type of person or do you shop around?

Take Them A Meal – Assisted Meal Planning

I don’t know about you but we seem to be signing up quite often to brings meals after a baby is born, when someone has surgery, etc. Usually someone is in charge of sending an email and coordinating which can sometimes get a little challenging when so many emails are circulating. Well an occasion presented itself for exactly this type of meal delivery and guess what? There is a great website created for this exact thing! Take Them A Meal is an assisted meal planning website and it is one of the coolest things I have seen as of late.  It is super user friendly, allows each person to see exactly who signed up and what they are bringing and when. It also allows the person receiving the meals to see what they are getting and from whom. There is also room for notes in regards to allergies and dislikes. So aside from the initial set-up, this is a maintenance free way to get some meals delivered to a friend or family member in need. Check it out here.

Meal planning and the best grilled cheese

I am really trying to be a lot better about meal planning. All of the “quick” trips to the grocery store add a whole lot of bills to my wee budget. So this week I meal planned. Leaving some room for left overs and last minute change of plans like dinner with friends or dining out {which I am also trying to be very conscience about — going out once a week for an entire month easily adds $200 to our entertaining budget. Let me tell you, I can think of so many other places that I would rather spend $200!}. How about you? Are you a meal planner or do you figure out meals at the last possible second?

This week, I have grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup on my menu. We are pretty basic. I always use sourdough bread for my grilled cheese. That with some butter and usually cheddar cheese as we pretty much always have cheddar on hand. In case you are looking for something a little more exciting, I came up with a few for you to try. Here ya go:

Grilled Gouda Sandwich as found on Delish. This one adds a little Dijon and spice for extra flavor. Click here for the recipe.

This recipe is courtesy of Tyler Florence who I happen to have a little bit of a foodie crush on {don’t tell my husband .. ha ha!}. He includes apples and bacon on his sandwich. Click here for the recipe.

This goodness is courtesy of All Recipes {a site I constantly find recipes on}. It has Granny Smith Apples and Swiss cheese. Yummy! Click here for the recipe.

I have saved the best for last. This is the mother of all grilled cheese websites and I am sharing it with all of you. It is called The Grilled Cheese Academy. O.M.G. There are far too many delish recipes to share. If you want to explore for yourself, be prepared to be wowed with mouth watering photos, click here to head on over to their site. I just ate dinner yet I am suddenly hungry again!

New Year, New Goals

Fresh Snow New Year, New Goals

For some reason the New Year is a kick off to many things. It feels peaceful like a fresh fallen snow. Blank. Like you can do whatever you want with it. Some people take this very seriously. For me, I am all about the clean slate as far as my house goes but resolutions I am a little less serious about. I think after December we all need to check in with our bodies {well except for those super disciplined people that are good throughout the holidays which I am not!}. It’s a great time to get back into a routine after the craziness that is the holiday season. My body could use some salads and a good healthy detox! How about you?

I am sitting here feeling awfully unmotivated. I blame it on the rain. I have actually had a good mix of being lazy and being active over winter break. Today is the final day then it is back to the good ol’ routine of school and such. Don’t get me wrong, I have a fairly good sized To Do List going but I am feeling super unmotivated. So I am sitting here instead listing my goals for 2011. That counts as something, right? icon wink New Year, New Goals

One resolution I have made, and try always to keep, is this:  To rise above the little things.~John Burroughs

I have a few things I’d like to tackle in the New Year. Ready?

  • Exercise more {a given resolution for most of us eh?}
  • Eat Better {you know, things like fruits and veggies and less chocolate and carbs?}
  • Read more ~ any good book suggestions out there?
  • Stress less {hence exercising more!}, breathe more {insert yoga here}
  • Craft more
  • Learn to knit

Those are just some of things I’d like to accomplish in 2011.

Now, some of the things I have already accomplished? Purging!! I have cleaned out the kids rooms, our playroom and even the kitchen cabinets. The pile of donation items is very large and it feels pretty good. Although I am also a little ashamed of how much excess we have. Wow. I know having some of the youngest children in the family including the only grandchildren on my side as well as the only nephews, it leaves a lot of room for spoiling but still. Wow. Excess! I am hoping to go into the new year with a little less. Think before I buy. Keep myself busy with what I do have instead of indulging on what I don’t need. More money on trips that makes memories instead of material items that make waste. Make sense?

OK – I think typing this has given me the motivation to start on the office purge. Most of which is scrapbook stuff but a lot of which I am not utilizing anymore. Time to revamp and reorg!! Happy New Year friends.

Get Organized – 2011 Calendar

Yet another way to get ready for a fresh new year. Get out that crisp, new 2011 calendar out and mark the important dates. Being married to a firefighter means that we have a different schedule and inconsistent work days so I make sure to transfer that info onto our family calendar which hangs on the fridge. It is the central way of keeping track of all things important such as school schedules, appointments, birthdays, etc. My husband and I add things to the calendar which comes in handy when we have things that conflict {you know, one of us wants to do something but the other already has dibs on that date!}. Also, my rule is that we write things in pencil that way we can easily erase things and the calendar does not look cluttered. I know, so Type A! I also started doing this when I bought a new address book a couple of years ago. Pencil only! Then there are not a lot of crossed out addresses, numbers, etc. You can only imagine my horror when my hubby wrote someones info in RED pen. I almost died. Seriously. It required some deep breathes to get through it. icon smile Get Organized 2011 Calendar I am fairly certain that will never happen again. Aside from my very basic office supply store calendar on my fridge, I am also looking for something simple for my office. More of a reference for bill paying, etc. I found a few cute ideas that I thought I’d share with you. I might even go the very simple route of just printing a freebie off of a generous free site.

I really like this one over at Wiley Valentine. I am loving this site in general. Mostly cause I am a major stationary junky.

I am also partial to this cute desk top style. Simple yet classy. It is also small and won’t take up much space which is key for me. You can find this and many more fun calendars over at Paper Source.

Butterfly Get Organized 2011 CalendarI also really like this simple clipboard calendar. It is over at Etsy. You buy, they will email it directly to you and then you can print it. Because I have a lot of clipboards and one of my goals this coming year is to utilize them to keep me organized, I might just buy this. Click here to head over to Fibers and Twigs for your own print out calendar.

Etsy Calendar 300x224 Get Organized 2011 CalendarAny-who, these are just a few of the easy basic calendars that are available. I am sure you can come up with many, many more. A little secret FYI, Borders now has their calendars on sale for 50% off and last I checked the selection was pretty good! So go ahead, get your self all geared up for the new year. Start by filling in the fun stuff like vacations. Slowly add the other things like your annual teeth cleaning, etc. Happy New Year friends!!!

Good-bye Tree

Well I did it, had too. My tree was so dead that it pained me to look at it any longer. It came down two days ago leaving behind enough pine needles to create a whole new tree! For now it sits on my front porch. Waiting. For Boy Scouts to come and take it away as they do every year. I know quite a few people use the New Year as their fresh start and thus taking down decorations. Well, I always think I will wait and then the tree pushes me. Needles everywhere so I cave and start the organizing of the seasonal decor. I am a major fan of Christmas and very sad to see the season come to an abrubt halt but it does and when that happens, I turn a page and go into clean and organize mode. Also known as “Type A Girl”. I admit, we are just barely a few days past Christmas and I have all of my Christmas decor nicely stored away and my kitchen is about 95% reorganized as well. I can’t help it. It’s like a drug. Once I start I can not stop and my list of projects goes on and on. OK, I guess none of this is totally relevant but I had to share icon smile Good bye Tree I have been missing writing but alas, the spirit of the season overcame me and I had to take a short hiatus.

Dead tree 300x200 Good bye TreeNow, as I mentioned we usually leave our tree for the Boy Scouts in early January with a donation in an envelope. Easy. Done. I am doing a little research though and did you know that many trees are not properly disposed of and end up in landfills? Take the time to do a little research before disposing of your tree. Click here for local places that will take proper care of your used trees. Also, do note that you might pay a fee but it will be a small price to pay to assure that your tree is properly recycled and turned into something resourceful versus sitting in a landfill. Also, the alternative should you be so willing it to turn in into firewood to keep yourself warm and cozy during these cold winter nights .

So what is the 411 on your tree disposal?

Resourceful Gift Giving

dictionary 3001 252x300 Resourceful Gift Giving

I think the never ending question is, “Will this gift be loved by the recipient?” Some people have a knack for accomplishing that. Others are a little more last minute, “Have to get a gift and quick” type of shoppers. Unless the person is super easy to shop for, this could backfire. I do have a couple of go to gift ideas. Yes, you still need to have a slight idea of what the person likes icon smile Resourceful Gift Giving I can’t make this that easy for you! Typically I find that men are harder to shop for. These might be the perfect gifts for the men or just plain hard to shop for people in your life. So a couple of quick, no brainers. Ready?

  • Netflix: Unlimited access to movies.
  • Gamefly: Video Games delivered right to your door.
  • Board Games: These are great because you can play them over and over. Plus it is a great way to spend time with family and friends.
  • Gift Certificates: Again, be mindful of what the person likes. Things like massages, restaurants, coffee shops, movie theaters, etc. are pretty well received.
  • Gift Cards: Perhaps someone is saving up for a BIG something {like a new TV perhaps?} You could contribute to this ‘fund’ by getting a card for a major appliance store.
  • The bottom line: It’s the thought that counts but make sure that you put some thought into what you are giving.
