Mother Load Orchards — $40 any size tree!

This was what we did last weekend. It was a beautiful sunny day with the perfect amount of snow on the ground. The adults searched for the perfect tree while the kids ran around and had snow ball fights. It was the perfect day for cutting down our Christmas Tree.

Christmas Tree Farms

I know you will receive this as you are planning for Thanksgiving — I am only sharing it mow so that you can have it for the day after Thanksgiving. Please do enjoy one holiday before beginning another icon smile Christmas Tree Farms

So yes — Tis the season to be jolly, deck the halls, etc. Now what comes with the kick off of the season? Decorating and what is the most important decoration of all? Well the Christmas Tree of course! Now we do see an awful lot of fake artificial trees these days BUT for those of you who prefer a beautiful fresh cut pine tree, I am here to share a few ideas of where you can get your tree this year.

christmas trees 300x212 Christmas Tree Farms

Do you want to cut down your own tree? Here are a few places at Apple Hill where you can do this. Please do check the weather conditions before you go, I was up that way on Sunday and there was a decent amount of snow. I was also told by a gentleman today at Costco that it was indeed a white out {sometimes people tell me random facts — this was one of them!}. This of course would make for the ultimate snowy Christmas photos but make sure you can drive into the farms. Another tip: Bring cash! Several seem to take cash or checks but not credit cards.

If you are located towards the Sacramento area, here are a few locations to check out.

I also found this site that shows all of the tree farms in California {should you not be near the ones I am sharing}. Please remember to contact them to assure that they are open though!

If you don’t have the time for a “tree adventure” then you have other options. First of all, there are tree lots on just about every corner. A few other options are Home Depot and Lowe’s. I have even bought a tree at Raleys in years past!

Do you have a tradition for getting your tree? I’d like to say that we do but it honestly depends on the year and what schedules we are working around. We have gotten some very pretty trees at Home Depot icon smile Christmas Tree Farms

Bee Green – Throw a “Green” Birthday Party with ACME Party Box

This is such a cute birthday idea and what a perfect time of year for a “forest party”. Think of the craft ideas using nature. You could make pine cone turkeys {just did these at school the other day — super cute!}, twig picture frames or even paint some rocks and use them as paper weights. There are so many options.

Inhabitots featured this great little idea and all of the goodies are courtesy of ACME Party Box Company. What great ideas they offer PLUS they are Eco friendly. Win win!id I mention that they are located in the Bay Area. You know what that means? Semi local people!! Which makes it MORE green. Click here to see the whole kit and caboodle. Bee Green – Bee Safe, E.coli in reusable bags

I have become oh so good at reusing my own bags. I would rather walk out with my hands full of stuff then use a plastic bag. Anyway enough about me and how great I am at using my own bags icon smile Bee Green Bee Safe, E.coli in reusable bags Did you know that reusable bags are also a perfect host for E.coli and other nasty microbes? Yep, seems that a little research was done by the American Chemistry Council and out of 84 bags tested, 12% tested positive for E.coli. A couple of tips for keeping these germies away?

  • Dedicate bags to certain items such as meat. As you would a cutting board.
  • Wash your bags with laundry soap and allow them to air dry.

Remember though, using these bags even with this added risk is still a much better bet as far as saving our planet — one bag at a time. On this same note, I just saw a sign at WalMart that said they would no longer be using plastic bags. They will offer their reusable totes for a small fee.

Are you good at remembering your reusable totes? How about washing them?

Bra October is PINK Boobies Rock So Recycle Your Bra For A Great Cause.

I am sure most of you are very much aware of the extra pink that seems to greet us during the month of October. Do you know why that is? October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. I am sure most of us have been touched by devastating disease directly. I have watched a few friends endure chemo and mastectomy’s. Now we are all pretty aware that these lovely parts of ours need to have some TLC – right? Do self exams girls. Take care of yourself. Be aware of any changes in your breasts.  If you are a little unsure on how to do this, please click here for a step by step.

No doubt there are fundraisers everywhere this month for this cause. Of course many companies are kicking back a portion earned towards various breast cancer organizations {I will include some of them below}. The American Cancer Society is also hosting a walk on October 17th. I am all signed up for that – wanna join me? icon smile October is PINK Boobies Rock So Recycle Your Bra For A Great Cause. Just follow 4 easy steps:

  1. Wash It. All bras should be washed.
  2. Tag It. Fill out Bra Recycling Form. (click here for the form)
  3. Box It. Place your bras in a box or large envelope.
  4. Drop It Off or Mail It to: 3317 S. Higley Rd, Ste 114-441
    Gilbert, AZ 85297

Also, participants who donate by Oct. 31 will be entered to win prizes that include gift certificates to intimate apparel companies and American Express gift cards. So come on, donate those new and gently used bras!

Now if you are up for a little shopping that will get make you pretty in pink AND support this cause, check out the BCRF {Breast Cancer Research Foundation} for some great finds. Christmas is right around the corner. Remember, you can buy now and gift later too! A gift and a donation all wrapped in one icon smile October is PINK Boobies Rock So Recycle Your Bra For A Great Cause. Pretty savvy of me eh? icon smile October is PINK Boobies Rock So Recycle Your Bra For A Great Cause. Another big supporter of Breast Cancer Research is the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Click here for more info.  Lee Denim also hosts a National Denim Day where you make a $5 contribution and you get to wear jeans. Back when I had a job that involved going into an office every day, I would get my co-workers involved in this one. If you are not a casual office, then this is a great way to at least wear jeans for a day! Click here for more details.

Please do support this very worthwhile cause.

Bee Green – How To Recycle Wine Corks

wine corks Bee Green How To Recycle Wine Corks

I love little tips on how to recycle something that is used often {this particular item is used VERY often by some of us icon smile Bee Green How To Recycle Wine Corks }. Do you drink wine? {guilty} If so, you probably have noticed that some wineries have switched to screw top. But still, many are still bottled with a cork. I have taken to saving my corks. They make a fun display in a clear vase. Did you know that you can also recycle them? Yep. CorkReharvest.org is a nonprofit organization that is collecting used corks and working with recycling centers to re-purpose  them into things such as floor tiles and coasters. Are you wondering where you can “recycle” your used corks? Whole Foods Market has a drop box. Click here for a location near you.

Bee Green – Sustainable Shoes by Simple, yes really!

I recently went on a little shopping spree courtesy of a gift card that I received from my girlfriends for my birthday {say that five times fast!}. Anyway, I was on a bit of a mission for some new shoes. My winter shoes wardrobe goes something like this: Uggs and tennis shoes. Really. So it was time for something else. I love Converse but they do not fit my feet right. I settled on a simple pair of sneakers by, well Simple! This brand really strives to be 100%  sustainable which just makes me feel like hugging a tree.  Among the resources used for creating their funky, stylish and comfy shoes are recycled carpet padding/ inner tubes/ car tires,  plastic {think water bottles, etc.}, hemp, silk, wool and bamboo. Even their packaging is Eco Friendly.

What are Simple Shoes made from?

I have this lovely friend that I have known for a very long time {no need for numbers as that might just date me!!}. She is a cheerleader for The Local Honey and keeps me informed of new and worthwhile products. So a great big thanks to Michelle for sending me links of great products that I can share with you!  I do appreciate it icon smile Graze Organic reusable sandwich and snack bags Last week she sent me a link to these super cool reusable bags. She is a mama of 2 young boys also on a quest to be more “green”. So check out this great little site, Graze Organic. They make bags that are made from 100% certified organic cotton. You can wash them and reuse them. Pretty cool uh? Think about how much waste our daily lunch creates when you include a plastic baggie for every snack. No good. So check out Graze Organic and see if you can make a difference if our landfills.

Reuse — Fusing Plastic Bags

I like to keep ya’all informed of how to incorporate the 3 R’s {say it with me: Reduce, reuse, recycle} into your daily routine. We have discussed reusable lunch bags and containers. I have even given a little shout out to fun water bottles that are eco friendly. Today I decided to do a little Google search on “how to reuse a plastic bag”. Wow! I found some super cool ideas. The following is a tutorial on how to fuse plastic bags. You can make them into so many cool totes. And guess what? They are ONE OF A KIND people!! You make em your way. I can only imagine the compliments one would get on these bags.

fused platic bag 264x300 Reuse Fusing Plastic BagsI found this one on Etsy {again, I heart Etsy!!!} The sellers name is RaspberryLatte. You can find this bag by clicking here.

So here is the tutorial if you’d like to make a tote of your own.

What you’ll need
Plastic bags (thin, flimsy ones work best)
Parchment paper, freezer paper or plain old copier paper
Iron (and your favorite ironing surface)

Making it, photos and tutorial courtesy of Etsy Labs Archive.
plastic3 Reuse Fusing Plastic Bags
Flatten out the bag and trim the bottom seam and handles off. This allows the bag to be opened up into a larger rectangle of plastic.
plastic4 Reuse Fusing Plastic Bags
Turn the bag inside-out if it has printing on it. Once the ink heats up, it comes off the bag and makes a huge mess. If the bag has an interesting design that you’d like to preserve, try using a clear plastic bag layered on top of the printed one.
We find that between 6-8 layers of plastic gives the best results. So, you can either fold your bag twice until it is 8 ply thick, or use three or more bags layered on top of one another. Trying to fuse less than 6 layers often results in little holes forming in the finished piece and a generally weaker material.
Sandwich your plastic bags between the parchment paper
plastic5 Reuse Fusing Plastic Bags
Next, run a hot iron (we set ours to “Rayon”, but you will need to experiment a little to see what works for you) and keep the iron moving constantly. Make sure to get the edges, and after about 15 seconds, flip it over and iron the opposite side for a few seconds.
plastic7 Reuse Fusing Plastic Bags
Peel a corner of the paper back to see if the plastic is fused together. It should be fairly smooth and “one sheet” to the touch (watch out, its a little hot). If the layers are not all melted together, iron it some more.
plastic8 Reuse Fusing Plastic Bags
plastic9 Reuse Fusing Plastic Bags
Peel the parchment paper away from the finished plastic sheet. Voila. Now, you can use this stuff to make a million things. We’ve made re-usable grocery totes, wallets, and floor cushions; I think its an inexpensive way to make waterproof linings for beach bags and makeup clutches.

What do you do with your old bags?? Recycle please icon smile Reuse Fusing Plastic Bags
