Do you ever feel like you get an abundance of “junk mail”? I am not one to stop all incoming mail — however I do try and pay my bills on-line, recieve bills on-line instead of paper bills and I also don’t need catalogs for companies such as American Girl when I have 2 boys and NO girls. How did I get on that mailing list anyway? Don’t get me wrong, I live vicariously through Pottery Barn so that catalog makes me happy but I also save it and reference it over and over. Which makes it feel like I am really being quite resourceful. If you would like to make a difference in the amount of unsolicited mail that you receive, check out this site, http://www.catalogchoice.org. Once you create an account {which takes a couple of minutes}, you can select the catalogs that you would like to opt out of receiving. Think about it: Less mail for you to sift through and you are actually saving the Earth, one catalog at a time.
Other ways to eliminate paper waste:
- Do your banking and bill pay on-line. You can even receive on-line statements from your creditors, banks, etc.
- Sort and purge: Immediately go through the mail, recycle what you do not need and file what you do.
- Pass on what you can — is it something that another person might find of interest? Pass it on!
- Reuse paper when and where you can – use the backside of paper, recycle, compost, kids art projects, etc.
We are in a time where we can access so much through our computers, phones, IPads {shall I go on?} don’t get me wrong – getting an actual catalog or magazine is sometimes rewarding and I would be sad to see the world of paper media completely dissolve however, I think the little tweaks can add up to something BIG.
How do you reduce your paper usage?
