Amador County Get Away

Eureka Street Inn1 Amador County Get AwayMy hubby and I received a couple of gift certificates a few years back for Christmas from his folks. Both were for businesses in Sutter Creek which is a quick 45 minute drive from El Dorado Hills. One was for a B&B called the Eureka Street Inn. It is an adorable little B&B located in the heart of Sutter Creek. The Innkeepers, Sandy and Chuck were hospitable and kind. There are 4 rooms available, each named after one of their granddaughters which is so personal and sweet. Chuck prepared a lovely breakfast which tasted as good as it looked. He made an apple french toast that was divine. Presentation is always fun when trying new foods.  Our second gift certificate was for a lovely restaurant called Susan’s Place. It was walking distance from the B&B. Susan’s is a quaint restaurant featuring Mediterranean style cuisine. We had a nice leisurely dinner complete with an appetizer, full course meal including soup or salad, desert and two beverages for $75. Not too shabby with an $80 gift certificate! I have actually heard that people travel from afar for their Asparagus Soup. I tried it and it was very good. We had plenty of time to enjoy the area. Sutter Creek is a quaint town filled with Craftsman Style homes. Most seemed to have inviting front porches with rocking chairs. I wanted to make myself at home but thought that might be a little strange! My point is that this town felt like a comfy lil’ hometown where anyone would be welcome. There are so many fun little stores to visit. One of my favorites was The Antique Gardener.  While wandering around this fun little shop — you will see a mix of things new and old. I also loved the cute little garden area out back where you could pick up pretty little plants, flowers and herbs. This is one of those great little stores where you will be sure to find a perfect present for someone on your list.

Swingles 300x176 Amador County Get AwayAnother destination while we were in the area was Swingles Meat Company in Jackson. We have heard from friends that this is a great place to stock your freezer. We decided since Jackson is only a quick 5 minute drive from Sutter Creek, that we would check them out. Now, I had posted in a previous blog about watching Food Inc and how it was discouraging as far as eating anything but grass fed & organic meat. I had a great conversation with the owner {who’s name is completely escaping me and I am feeling some guilt for that!} in regards to his opinion of the latest movement in eating meats that are local and organic. After a lengthy conversation, I came to my own conclusion — I am content to buy from a semi-local butcher with an outstanding reputation that knows where it’s product comes from and is also aware of it’s entire journey. This allows for a quality control that might be missed in mass production with large companies. We are about to grill up one of our purchases which is a Kona Marinated Pork Tri-tip. Sounds like it will make for a good dinner to me!

All in all we had a great little get away sans kids. The location was close enough for a quick trip yet far enough away to feel like we could get away relax and enjoy ourselves. There are so many things to do in Amador County. Go here for a list of other things to do. There are several charming B&B’s, delightful restaurants, beautiful wineries and fun shops. If you are looking for a weekend away with out a lot of travel, head over to Amador County — I assure you, it will be an enjoyable experience.

Do you have a place that is semi local that you can escape to for a quick overnight or weekend getaway?

Kale Chips — quick, easy and addicting

Hello there friends! I feel like life has completely gotten away from me this summer. Don’t get me wrong, it is filled with all things wonderful but it is also super busy and at times, overwhelming. My To Do List is not getting any shorter BUT on the upside, I am making memories with my family and friends. That is more important anyway, right? Sometimes being the Type A girl that I am, I have to take a step back to remember that icon smile Kale Chips quick, easy and addicting I have a few posts to add today — fun finds in some of our recent close to home travels. So come on back, I will be blogging away.

The real point behind this post is to of course share a yummy and easy recipe for Kale Chips. It sounds a little bizarre BUT I promise, I ate almost all of them in one sitting. My 7 year old liked them but my 4 year old was very apprehensive which is just how he is about all foods. He wouldn’t even try them.

Baked Kale Chips

Ingredients

  • 1 bunch kale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon seasoned salt

Directions

  1. Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line a non insulated cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  2. With a knife or kitchen shears carefully remove the leaves from the thick stems and tear into bite size pieces. Wash and thoroughly dry kale with a salad spinner. Drizzle kale with olive oil and sprinkle with seasoning salt.
  3. Bake until the edges brown but are not burnt, 10 to 15 minutes.

Super easy and a yummy mid day snack. I actually prefer the kale this way as opposed to raw or cooked in soups, etc. Do you have a recipe for a veggie in disguise?

Crunchy Peanut Butter-Banana Popsicles

banane 198x300 Crunchy Peanut Butter Banana PopsiclesI found these yummy treats in my newest edition of Self Magazine. They were so easy and yummy. Plus they have a mere 165 calories. Not too shabby considering that they are made with healthy peanut butter and bananas. Both are great workout foods. So you can enjoy this frozen treat and know that you are getting a little potassium, calcium and protein.

Crunchy Banana-Peanut Butter Popsicle
3 medium bananas, 1 cup 1% milk, 3 T honey, 5 T natural PB — blend together and then stir in 1/2 c lightly salted dry roasted peanuts, chopped. Pour into Popsicle holders or 8 Dixie cups with a craft stick or plastic knife. Freeze 6 hours.

Volunteer — you get back so much more then you give

Hands 300x245 Volunteer you get back so much more then you giveVolunteering – Something that is not only good for those who receive but also helpful to those who give. It seems that there are so many in need. Time is pretty hard to come by for most of us but isn’t it nice to give some extra help for those in need? I have volunteered in a few different ways — most of which has been right near home in my childrens  schools. There are obviously a whole slew of other opprortunities right in our neighborhoods. I am highlighting a few of them here on The Local Honey. Can you pitch in and help?

The Grace Foundation is looking for volunteers to help with various activities. Go here for more info.

Check out http://www.takepart.com/ to find opportunities within your area.

The Food Bank of El Dorado County could always use some assistance. Find them here.

Help out at the library — You can check your local library for more info. Here is the link to the El Dorado County Libraries.

Hands 4 Hope is in need of  adult volunteers. They are local to El Dorado Hills. You can find them here.

The Crisis Nurseries are also in need of volunteers and donations. You can find them here.

Other ideas include: local zoos, parks, farms, nursing homes, schools — just do a little searching for something you are good at and I bet there is a place for you to dedicate some time. You might even ignite a new passion that you did not know existed. Think about it, wouldn’t you be happy giving your time doing something worth while?

According to Nationalservice.gov, the health benefits of volunteering are also well worth it. The report shows that volunteers have greater longevity, higher functional ability, lower rates of depression and less incidence of heart disease.

There are also career perks with volunteering. You might be able to learn new skills, make new relationships, find a new job and even boost already used skills. So many great things can come out of your time and energy.

Do you volunteer? How does it add to your life?

Healthy eating: Boring or not?

mixed salad 300x225 Healthy eating: Boring or not?Variety is the spice of life, however being consistent can help you lose weight. OK so this is coming from a girl that is a total foody but still — I think it is a smart bit of info to share!! Recently I read (can not recall the exact source but the info is stuck in my head) that if you are consistent in what you eat (think healthy people!!), you may see a decrease in your weight. Of course this is one of those things that you often see in Shape or Fitness Magazine in regards to secret weight loss or stay slim secrets of the Hollywood actresses, models, etc. Yes, they also have access to personal chefs, trainers, etc. That is beside the point, I am getting a bit off track here. So what exactly do I mean? Consistency means eating the same types of meals. Example menu courtesy of Health.com.

  • Breakfast
    Banana-Walnut Oatmeal (1 c. cooked oatmeal; small banana, sliced; 2 T walnuts; 1 T honey); glass of 1% reduced-fat milk (1 c.); sections of 1 orange
  • Lunch
Ham and cheese sandwich: Lean deli ham (3 oz); light Swiss cheese (1 oz); 2 slices rye bread; sliced tomato, lettuce; 1 tsp each: low-fat mayonnaise and grainy mustard; 1 apple
  • Supper
Herb-roasted chicken, skin removed (6 oz); small baked sweet potato, skin removed; 1 tsp butter; steamed whole green beans (1/2 c.) with drizzle of olive oil (1/2 tsp); chopped fresh pineapple (1/2 c.)
  • P.M. Snack
    Small apple

Now you could mix this up by changing little things like the fruits, nuts, types of meat or veggies but the point is, you have a basic platform to stay on. Of course this takes some serious willpower of which I am still searching for icon smile Healthy eating: Boring or not? I guess the bottom line is to eat what you like in moderation. Do not try to copy the idea behind Supersize Me. That was proven to be quite unhealthy after all. Just remember, calories in and calories out are meant to be a healthy balance. And with all of this being said, I am going to indulge in a teeny tiny cone of homemade strawberry ice cream.

How do you balance healthy eating and eating happily?

South River Lavender in Mt. Aukum

lavdender1 300x200 South River Lavender in Mt. AukumAh Mt. Aukum. Yes, I am a little partial to this hole in the wall location — it is where I spent summers and holidays as a child. A place that I adore and hold so many special memories for me. When I stumbled upon this fun little spot, South River Lavender, I had to share! They are having open houses the next two Saturdays.  They are offering classes and of course, just being around lavender is relaxing. They also have a fun on-line gift shop with a great selection of lavender goodies. It’s only a short drive away but sounds like a fun time!
