Summer is rapidly approaching although that feels kinda funny to say considering all of this rain we have had lately. I know, I know – we really needed it. I am still glad to see the blue skies and feel the warm sunshine on my shoulders. It just does something for my mood. I am one of those people who does really well when the seasons change but I am also ready when the time comes for them to change again. I like sun, I like rain, I mostly love Fall but that is a whole other post!! So today let me chat a bit about Summer. I have two boys, one is wrapping up 1st grade and the other is finishing his final year of preschool and will be attending Kindergarten starting this August (don’t even ask how that makes me feel — my baby is getting so big!) So Summer Vacation starts for us very soon. Ben is out of school on May 27th and Mason is done on June 11th. I have sat down and looked at the calendar. We seem to have a non stop run of events and activities. I always have big plans for summer yet it seems to just fly by without me touching half of my summer to do list. Here are a couple of things penned in as well as some things I am hoping to get too in our “free time”.
We are about to attend our third year of Blitz. Blitz is an amazing 4 day camp at Lakeside Church. There is a different theme every year and a whole host of activities to go with it. They have huge blow up water slides, art, singing and all of the fun goodies that come with camp. I love showing up right before pick up and seeing all of the camp leaders and kids singing to end the day. It really is an amazing production with a lot of behind the scenes hard work. Sign ups are going on now.
Another thing that seems to be on our calendar throughout summer is none other than CAMPING!! Of course this is such a summer thing so everyone seems to have a camping trip planned. Read on for some fun spots and find the links to book a site. We do have a trailer that we share with another family (which works out PERFECTLY)
Camping trip #1: Ben and my husband are going to Cub Scout camp at Lassen National Park in July. This is a fun-filled 4 day trip. It is the first year they are attending and it is supposed to be a blast!! Scouting is something we are relatively new to but I am enjoying being a Den Mom and all that comes with scouting. It is a great outlet for young boys. If you have a nature boy like I do, you should check into a program through your local school. Now speaking of Lassen, it is beautiful! My husband and I hiked to the peak on our honeymoon. It was so amazing and something I am very glad that I did. There are several camp sites to stay at. Check them out here.
Camping trip #2: We are going to Fallen Leaf Lake with our “trailer family”. We personally have not camped there yet but they have and loved it! We did however make a road trip there last year and stumbled upon something amazing!! If you dare to drive back beyond the large “cabins” you will find a beautiful lake. A lot of people do not seem to know about it as it is fairly secluded. There is a small store and cafe located on site but it seems many people have yet to stumble upon this. Another tip: keep driving and you will come upon a waterfall. It really was a gorgeous location. The camp sites are not near this area and it was a little bit of a drive but so worth it. Here is a photo of Ben jumping off the doc. This photo is what summer is all about. Fallen Leaf Lake is located just a mile outside of South Lake Tahoe. An easy drive up the 50 corridor. For camp site reservations go here.
Camping trip #3: This trip is at the end of summer. Our finale before school starts again. We have gone to Dillon Beach a handful of times. We camp at Lawson’s Landing. This is one of my favorite places. I am a big fan of the ocean though. It just makes me feel so peaceful and happy. This is a trip that we tend to make with a large group of people. You do not reserve individual sites and it is first come, first serve. We tend to have someone from our party get there early and rope off an area that accommodates everyone. My personal tip for the perfect spot: Get there early, stay to the left of the main road and also stay towards the front of the resort. Just my own personal opinions. Another thing to be aware of, this is a tent friendly resort but there are a whole lot of trailers so if that is not up your alley, then it may not be the place for you. The beach is just over the sand dunes. A little walk but hours of fun for the kids. Also, you can climb to the top of the dunes and slide down on snow discs. Pretty resourceful uh?? You can use a snow disc in all seasons at Dillon Beach.
Another quick and fun day trip? Pick fresh berries at Patrick’s Berry Farm located in Camino. It is nestled in among the many apple orchards at Apple Hill. This is a must see spot in the Fall as well.
The other thing on my list is a day trip to San Francisco. I’d like to spend a day taking the boys around the city. There are so many fun spots including Fisherman’s Wharf, Golden Gate Park, Coit Tower and I would actually love to take a ride on a cable car. Of course a bowl of steaming clam chowder is a must!
These are just a few summer activities I thought I’d share with you. Make memories and have fun!
